On September 28, 2022, climber and filmmaker Chelsea Walsh and her buddy Gavin Escobar perished in a catastrophic rock climbing accident at Tahquitz Rock in Idyllwild.

In addition to being a skilled climber who took the craft of climbing seriously, Chelsea was also a voracious storyteller and adventurer who gave her all to the things she loved.

The activity of climbing was one among them. No challenge was ever too great for her, therefore she loved the challenge as well as the mental space that focusing on a problem gave her brilliant, mind that worked a million miles per hour.

And above all, she cherished engaging in this activity with her pals.

Because of how infectious her passion, drive, and energy were, she shared her love of climbing with so many of them and introduced so many of them to the sport as well.

These were friends who probably never pictured themselves hundreds of feet up on a rock or in a gym.

But there was so much more to Chelsea because she was Chelsea. She would be furious that we even have to be writing this about her in the first place.

She aimed to elevate and support everyone around her with everything she did.  She would definitely advise us to move on from this situation fast and not to cry too much.  Sorry, but there simply aren’t any words to convey the love, commitment, generosity, and compassion Chelsea put into all she did.  When she gave you her warm, generous, and unwavering attention, she was able to stop you in your tracks—and not just because occasionally her hair was blue-green.  She had a single goal and a single passion.  She had the ability to disarm you with her frankness, honesty, and purposefulness.  Every day she stated the truth and behaved accordingly. 

She was renowned for always saying the truth despite the nonsense. However, she always handled it with such grace and wit that you couldn’t help but recognize it for what it was—a sincere demonstration of her love and concern.

As a writer of stories, a climber, a partner, a sister, an aunt, a coworker, a friend, and the mother of a wonderful puppy. Chelsea brought a unique and unequaled blend of fierceness, kindness, courage, and love to all of her interactions as a filmmaker, storyteller, climber, daughter, sister, aunt, partner, coworker, friend, and dog-mom to lovely Higgins.  Everyone of us who had the good fortune to spend any time in her vicinity is aware of the aura of enchantment she imbued in everything she touched with her boundless brilliance, inventiveness, and compassion.  She was constantly considering what else she could be doing to improve the world. 

We all benefited from her earnest commitment to that responsibility.

She made those of us who were around her feel bright and inspired, and she made sure that we are so much poorer without her; I knew her better for it.
