Throughout his career in Major League Baseball as a right-handed pitcher for eight different teams from 1962 to 1983. In 1991, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

He had two siblings and was a middle child; older brother Jim Perry and younger sister Carolyn. His brother Jim like him is a former Major League Baseball pitcher.
During his 17-year baseball career, he pitched from 1959 to 1975 for four teams. He also compiled 215 wins, 1,576 strikeouts, and a 3.45 earned run average.
In 2011, he was inducted into the Twins Hall of Fame in a ceremony before a Twins home game. Jim also has a son named Chris, who is a professional golfer who has been featured in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking.
