The police arrested Gylfi Sigurdsson in the United Kingdom on 16 July 2021.

On the day of the arrest, Greater Manchester Police didn’t reveal his name. Then, on the 19th, Everton announced a first-team player’s suspension but didn’t confirm the identity as the one that the authorities detained. And finally, on 20 July, the website of the Icelandic news, mbl.is, disclosed the suspect as Gylfi.

They charged him with a child sex offense. A few days later, reports said he got released from jail and was on bail. Although his family was with him for support, his wife remained in Iceland.

Following the news, Everton, where he plays, suspended him. The Premier League club stated that they had dismissed a first-team player due to a pending police investigation and would support the authorities with their inquiries without making any further statements.

With the conclusion of the summer transfer window in September, the team submitted its twenty-four-man squad for the remainder of the 2020-21 season, omitting Gylfi from the list. 

Although The Toffees didn’t name him overtly, he remains suspended and won’t be able to play till the conclusion of the January transfer window, even if he were to be cleared, of the accusations.

In addition to him not playing, State Energy removed his pictures from the energy drinks. He had a four-and-a-half-year deal with the beverage maker in early June.
