England fans have called for Gareth Southgate to star in a new Pizza Hut campaign after a 1996 advert for the restaurant resurfaced online following Three Lions crushing defeat against Germany last night.

The manager famously missed the last goal of the penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals against Germany in Euro 1996, causing England to crash out the competition.

Shortly after he starred in an advert for Pizza Hut, where he sat in the restaurant with a brown paper bag on his head, along 1990 penalty missers Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle.

The ad shows Pearce shout ‘Miss, Miss, Miss’ at a waitress, before giggling ‘that’s pan pizza, unless i’m not mis-taken’.

He then adds ‘come on Gareth, it only took me six years to get over it’ as the then centre-back lifts the paper bag off to eat the meal.

‘Thanks a lot boys, I feel a lot better now,’ he says, before walking into the wall, which causes Pearce to joke ‘now he’s hit the post’.

The manager was apparently reluctant to appear in the advert, but was convinced by the other players and a generous fee.

Last night, the advert reappeared on Twitter, with many young England fans discovering it for the first time after Southgate lead England to a 2-0 victory securing their first win against Germany since the 1966 World Cup Final.

‘Happy for Southgate, should get another Pizza Hut ad out of that,’ said one.

‘Of course Gareth was for a long time known as the guy from the Pizza Hut advert. All joking aside, the 1996 miss was the making of him. Good luck to Gareth Southgate. He is a likeable, decent bloke,’ added another.

‘@pizzahut is it time for a redemption advert for Gareth Southgate? :)’ said another.

‘I am particularly pleased for Gareth Southgate. I remember ’96 well and the fallout for him (and the Pizza Hut advert). What a great night for him. Absolutely brilliant. I wish him all the very best and what a lovely arc,’ commented another fan.

‘I think it’s time we all forgive Gareth Southgate for the Pizza Hut and move one now,’ wrote one.

Many thought Pizza Hut should bring out a 25th anniversary advert to mark his redemption too.

‘If Gareth Southgate doesn’t celebrate by having Pizza Hut then honestly what was the point?’ wrote one.

‘This is Southgate’s redemption from the missed penalty in 96 and the Pizza Hut Ad with the bag on his head,’ added a third.
