Dancing with the Stars: Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke Will Perform Alone, Virtually After Testi

Dancing with the Stars fans, get ready for what could be one of the most bizarre performances of all time. After Peloton instructor Cody Rigsby and his pro dance partner Cheryl Burke both tested positive for COVID-19, the ABC competition show will allow them to dance on the live show this week. Only, due to their isolation period, they’ll have to dance virtually and solo, recording themselves from their own homes.
As Rigsby performs a solo jazz number from his home in New York, Burke will dance “with him” virtually from Los Angeles. The couple have selected jazz dancing as it can be performed without clasping hands together, a fine way for the duo to stay in the competition.
“We will be doing it from the comfort of our own home,” Burke said on Good Morning America today, per People. “Look at that, I’ve turned our living room into a ballroom.”
In an emotional video posted on Instagram this past Sunday (Sept. 26), Burke revealed she had tested positive for COVID-19. “I have really bad news… The PCR test came back, and it came back positive,” she said. “I just feel so bad for Cody. I feel like I’m letting him down. I feel like sh*t, to be quite honest. And it’s so overwhelming because it’s Sunday, and the show’s tomorrow.”
Rigsby tested positive yesterday (Sept. 30), announcing it was the second time he had been diagnosed with COVID this year. Both Burke and Rigsby are vaccinated against COVID-19, meaning that their positive tests are breakthrough cases. Because Rigsby has the antibodies from his previous diagnosis as well as the vaccine, he shared that his symptoms were mild.
“So that must be the vaccine antibodies working,” he said in an Instagram video. “So we’re super grateful for that.”
The pair were able to compete on this week’s episode by using a recording from their rehearsals earlier in the season. But now, since the pair have been isolating in their own homes since Sunday, they’ve been unable to tape anything together for this week’s episode.
Dancing with the Stars airs Monday nights on ABC at 8/7c. New episodes can be viewed the next day on demand and on Hulu.
