Back in black: TJ Perenara snubs Roosters to stick with New Zealand Rugby

TJ Perenara will not trade rugby for rugby league.

The All Blacks star had been linked to the Roosters on a deal worth about $150,000 for the remainder of the season but has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby and the Hurricanes until the end of 2023.

The two-year deal is believed to be worth about $1 million.

Talks broke down with the Roosters after Perenara decided he did not want to move his young family to Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While he was willing to join the Roosters on a cut-price deal, he was also hopeful of earning almost $1 million a season through the first few months of the year in Japan.

When the 29-year-old decided he did not want to move his family abroad, the deal with the Roosters was off.

“My wife and I have decided to come back to the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby for the next two and a half years,” Perenara wrote on social media.

“We’re really excited at the journey …. really looking forward to seeing everyone back home and thanks to the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby for allowing me the opportunity to come home and do what I love.”

Perenara made the decision after his Japanese club – the NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes – were knocked out of the competition in the quarter finals at the weekend.
