A California father has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his four children and their grandmother inside their home.

Gemarcus David, 29, turned himself in to sheriffs in Lancaster after the shooting on Sunday evening, and on Monday was arrested.

The bodies of the four children, who locals said were all under the age of 12, and their grandmother aged in her 50s were found at the house that David jointly owned with a woman, Tyanna Brown.

David is a licensed security guard whose firearm permit was canceled, according to a state database analyzed by The Los Angeles Times. The California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services were unable to explain the cancellation.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home in Lancaster, north of Los Angeles, at around 10.30pm, after the mother of the children found them inside the house.

When the deputies arrived at the scene, they found an adult woman and four children suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

All of the children – three boys and a girl, according to CBS Los Angeles – were pronounced dead at the scene.

David is being held on a $2 million bail.

Waki Jones, who works at a daycare and dropped the older children off at elementary school, told The Los Angeles Times the oldest children were Amaya, 12, and Demarcus, 9.

‘Amaya was a sweet girl, and every morning, the mom would tell her, ‘Say good morning to coach,’ Jones said, which was what the kids called him.

‘She was always protecting her brother, making sure he was safe at school.

‘It’s just unbelievable. I can’t believe they’re gone.’

The victim’s names have not been officially confirmed.

‘We saw a woman screaming outside, and we don’t know who she is, but she was yelling,’ Beltran told the paper.

The circumstances around the deaths and a possible motive are also unclear as of Monday morning.

The homicides are now under investigation.
