Larry Sanders, a 53-year-old man from Oklahoma, was detained over the weekend on suspicion of killing his companion. Sanders asserted that he committed the crime as a result of his friend calling on Bigfoot to murder him.

Jimmy Knighten has been named as the victim. According to Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian, Larry Sanders could face first-degree murder charges if found guilty of the crime.

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office asked for assistance on July 10 investigating a potential homicide, according to a press release from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).

Just the day before, Sanders and Knighten were noodling in the South Canadian River, a fishing method in which bare hands are used to catch fish, when “a dispute ensued.” Knighten died as a result of this taking a violent turn. According to reports, Sanders admitted to killing Knighten by “striking, strangling, and then drowning” him to the police.

Sheriff John Christian claimed that when Sanders was questioned about the event, it appeared as though he had consumed alcohol. He didn’t undergo any drug testing, though. According to OSBI, an autopsy on Knighten will also be performed by the chief medical examiner to ascertain the cause of death.

On July 9, when deputies initially arrived to a 911 call, Sanders admitted to the act and allegedly charged Knighten with calling Bigfoot. Christian described Sanders’ assertion as follows:

Therefore, he said that Mr. Knighten had called “Bigfoot” to come and murder him and that was the reason he had to kill Mr. Knighten.
The Sheriff added that even though Larry Sanders had acknowledged to killing his friend, they still needed to find the right proof.

Christian was cited as stating in a KTEN report:

“It usually makes things simpler. Even though the suspect is telling you what happened, you still need to demonstrate all of the other parts of the crime.”

Sanders, 53, was initially detained and lodged in a jail cell on the suspicion of an unsolved warrant. However, he was charged with one count of first-degree murder after police found Knighten’s body on July 10. In Oklahoma, a charge of first-degree murder is considered an extremely serious act and carries a death sentence. Life in prison is the minimum punishment for the same offense.

According to Oklahoma law, there are four different ways that a person can murder someone. Malice aforethought murder, criminal murder, and child abuse murder are the three most typical first degree murder accusations in Oklahoma.
