Parents, sitter charged after 11-month-old Mercedes Lain found dead in Indiana woods

The parents and babysitter of an 11-month-old girl in Indiana have been charged after the baby was found dead in a wooded area.

Mercedes Lain was reported missing after being last seen Saturday in Mishawaka with Justin Lee Miller, according to a Silver Alert issued by police.

On Wednesday, police made the grim discovery, and announced the arrest of Miller, and parents Kenneth Lain and Tiffany Coburn, at a Thursday press conference published by The Goshen News.

Lain, 41, and Coburn, 32, were charged with neglect of a dependent on Monday after refusing to cooperate in the search for the baby, while Miller, 37, was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, police said.

Miller is a family friend who was watching the baby for several days.

“The search for Mercedes Lain, 11-months-old, ended at approximately 9:30 p.m. in a remote, obscure, densely forested area,” Marshall County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Nelson Chipman said.

“After several times being interviewed, Justin Miller led investigators to this location in Stark County,” Chipman said.

It’s unclear how young Mercedes died.
