Brent Renaud is being remembered across the globe by fans, friends, and family as a man as full of passion as he was full of compassion. He was a famed writer, journalist, and documentary filmmaker who died doing what he loved; capturing the essence of strife and struggle and documenting it to later share with the world. As he entered war-torn Ukraine and embarked on his mission to document the horrors that the Ukrainians were facing while under Russian attack, he had no idea he would never make it out alive. Renaud was admired and respected by his peers, and the world has truly lost a deeply caring man whose integrity and reputation will never be forgotten.

The Man Behind The Literature

Brent Renaud was fatally shot in the Ukraine while tirelessly working to cover the horrific situation imposed on the citizens of this Eastern European country.  He has been heavily immersed in documenting some of the world's most catastrophic events, and has been at the center of more than a few dangerous situations. He first began his career by taking a job with the CBC in 1991. A truly passionate man that threw himself into his work, Renaud gave an entire decade of his life to the network, before moving on to accept a lucrative job with the New York Times.

Renaud's sheer determination to preserve the integrity of every story he covered, was surpassed only by his innate ability to retell it to his audience with accuracy. He was the source of  riveting, first-hand accounts of some of the world's most critical, high-profile events such as "the Syrian war, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Russian War on Ukraine, War between India and Pakistan."

In no time at all, Renaud was praised as being the most important foreign correspondent to represent the New York Times.

A Fearless Voice

For decades, Renaud was the fearless voice behind numerous publications. His captivating coverage was in-depth, informative, and analytically assembled. He was known by his fans and readers as being the journalist that continuously ventured into some of the most dangerous corners of the world, mesmerizing fans with his re-telling of events that were so accurate they could practically see the sights and hear the sounds of his surroundings. He was able to give his audience a taste of some of the horrors he had witnessed first-hand, and he worked to document human suffering in a way that pulled people in to a world they would otherwise never be able to understand. He was able to breathe factual details into stories so pivotal, yet so out-of-reach for the average reader, and by doing so, he quickly became the voice for the voiceless.

Bleeding emotion on to every page with factual accuracy and an eternally respectful demeanor, proved to be a lucrative career for Renaud. During his years at the New York Times, he was earning well over $250,000 a year.

Making It Big In Films

With seemingly no end to his incredible talents as a writer and journalist, Brent Renaud also went on to dominate in the world of film. Working alongside his brother, Craig, Brent went on to produce films for both television and the big screen. His combined talents as a journalist and filmmaker brought some of the horrors he had witnessed to life, making his information even more tangible for his audience. His work was highly esteemed and he went on to win many  of the top awards in television and journalism, including "a Peabody Award, two Columbia DuPont Awards, two Overseas Press Club Awards, an Edward R. Murrow Award, an IDA Award, a DGA nomination for Best Directors, and multiple Emmy nominations."

Losing A Legend

Brent Renaud was a truly legendary figure in both journalism and filmmaking. His first-hand accounts of some of the most troubling situations unfolding in our world have rocked his followers to the core. On March 13th, 2022, Renaud and fellow American photographer Juan Arredondo were traveling in a car in Irpin, just outside of Kyiv, when Russian forces attacked and opened fire. Renaud was shot in the neck and did not survive his injuries.

He leaves behind a legacy of unprecedented success in journalism, and in film, and a $3 million fortune which represents his tireless work in the field. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly spoke out to pay tribute to Renaud in honor of his memory, calling him a "talented and brave journalist, and condemning the Russians for this senseless act.
