Sound of Freedom Earns $40 Million at the Box Office

An independent dramatic thriller film is competing against big-studio blockbusters this summer. Sound of Freedom has already earned more than double its budget since its release on Tuesday. The faith-based movie led by director and co-writer Alejandro Monteverde has made $40 million since the Fourth of July, right behind Insidious: The Red Door and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Sound of Freedom’s distributor Angel Studios crowdfunded its marketing for the movie from the public and previous investors, even creating a “Pay It Forward” campaign where people can donate tickets to those who cannot afford to see the film in theaters. Starz Turns Heels

Streamliner At your service. Streamliner At your service. Heels. We knew Heels was down for the count, but we didn’t know it’d be knocked out quite this fast — at least on streaming. The fan-favorite wrestling drama that paired Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig as rivalrous bros went peering off a cliff less than two months ago before its unceremonious cancellation. And Starz has spiked the show from its various streaming channels and apps: Heels is no longer available to stream with a subscription, whether you signed up through Starz proper or its portals on like Apple TV or Amazon. Stereophonic Moves to Broadway, and Thunder Happens

From Stereophonic, now at the John Golden Theatre. This review was originally published on April 19, 2024. At the 77th Tony Awards, Stereophonic won five awards, including Best Play. The Act One climax of David Adjmi’s Stereophonic is one of the most exhilarating moments I’ve experienced in a theater in recent memory. We’re in a recording studio in Sausalito, California, evoked in gorgeous detail, down to the smallest dial, the scuzziest beanbag chair and crocheted throw. [Read More]

Stranger Things 4s Best Descriptive Captions, Ranked

Webster’s Dictionary defines art as “skill acquired by experience, study or observation.” For Kant, the art of genius is “a kind of representation that is purposive in itself, and, though without an end, nevertheless promotes the cultivation of the mental powers for sociable communication.” A Hegelian understanding of art is based less on a work’s power to communicate and instead locates artistic merit in the ability to convey a deep metaphysical truth. Succession Power Rankings: A Meal Fit for a King

As Succession teaches us, we all can find ourselves doing things we never imagined we’d do: selling out a spouse just to eat shit for some Swede, owning up to killing that waiter that one time (then backtracking and pretending it was a made-up story to help with sibling bonding), chugging a smoothie of raw eggs and spit. Personally, I never thought I could be so emotionally invested in the outcome of a neck-and-neck board vote over a fictional company’s sale to a fictional tech freak, but here I am, nibbling my nails down to the quick, tears forming in these human eyes we all have. Sufjan Stevens on the First Time He Saw Call Me by Your Name

Sufjan Stevens has now seen Call Me by Your Name four times, but the very first time he went to watch it, he was dreading the experience. It was a little over a year ago when director Luca Guadagnino invited the singer-songwriter to northern Italy to watch an early edit of the acclaimed romance, which memorably uses three songs sung by Stevens, two of which — “Mystery of Love” and “Visions of Gideon” — he wrote expressly for the film. SZA. SZA dropped the single “Good Days” as a Christmas gift to fans nearly two years ago. And now, as the holiday season enters into full force, we’re finally getting a good day: SOS, her highly anticipated follow up to 2017’s era-defining album Ctrl, is here. The new 23-track album features collaborations with Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers, Travis Scott, and —thanks to a sample pulled from documentary footage — Ol’ Dirty Bastard. [Read More]

Taye Diggs and Timothy Olyphant Went Shirtless on New Girl, Mindy

Last night’s back-to-back episodes of The Mindy Project and New Girl had something in common other than quirky protagonists: extremely hunky real man guest stars. Providing a haven from the young’uns who parade topless through the CW, Jess found a shirtless Taye Diggs in her bed, while Mindy dressed the wounds of a topless Timothy Olyphant. It was magical. Even if you’re not a fan of either sitcom, you have to admit that they’re giving the audience what they want here. [Read More]
