Prince Had a Very Prince Reaction to Being Forced to Share a Bathroom With Justin Timberlake

Prince. Today would’ve been Prince’s 60th birthday, and to celebrate, Variety spoke to several of his collaborators to reminisce about his funniest moments. Prince was, of course, a known expert jokester who incited food fights, had tour mates kidnapped onstage, and prank called all his colleagues. But perhaps his most infamous brand of humor was unintentional, most often the result of his dry sarcasm and merciless shade. One target of the latter was his old foe Justin Timberlake, whom Prince once dragged to hell and back for JT’s audacious insinuation with “SexyBack” that sexy had ever left whilst Prince, the inventor of sex, still walked this earth. R.E.M. Finally Sounding Like R.E.M. Again

Photo: WireImage Obviously it was with major trepidation that we approached “Supernatural Superserious,” the super-stupidly titled new R.E.M. song from the band’s forthcoming album, Accelerate. Does anyone even remember the last time they released a truly excellent single? (1996, “Electrolite” — thanks Wikipedia!) Mostly, they’ve just been farting around in the studio with synthesizers, drum machines, and Q-Tip. Till now, apparently — “Superserious” sounds like something that wouldn’t have been completely out of place on New Adventures in Hi-Fi or even Out of Time if Kate Pierson were singing backup on it (which, tragically, she is not). Ranking All 27 Seasons of The Real World

There have been 27 seasons of MTV’s The Real World, with number 28’s Portland season debuting tomorrow night: In a superhuman accomplishment that my future grandchildren will surely idolize me for, I have somehow watched them all. Somehow this show has stuck with me longer than all of my friendships. It’s almost as old (in years, not seasons) as my youngest sibling. What began as something that could at least pass the laugh test as a social experiment has evolved (devolved — let’s be honest) to something that is both a relic and emblematic of MTV’s binge-drink/hookup/fight wheelhouse. Reckoning With the Weight of Chris Cornells Lyrics

Chris Cornell was 52 when he died. If a singer sings of suicide, then dies of his own will, what happens to the songs themselves? The question had clearly been on Chris Cornell’s mind for a while: When asked by Rolling Stone in 1994 whether it was “legitimate to read a songwriter’s demise into his lyrics after the fact,” he responded, with typical thoroughness and sincerity, that it was impossible not to, at least for a while. Remembering Jonathan Demme, One of Cinemas Most Contagious Enthusiasts

Jonathan Demme, one of the American cinema’s finest, most insistently humanist directors, has died at the absurdly young age of 73, from complications of throat cancer and heart disease. It’s hard to imagine New York or the world or the movies without Demme in the house. How do you eulogize someone whose overriding aspect is aliveness? I guess you start by simply naming some of his wonderful movies, in chronological order: Caged Heat, Handle With Care, Melvin and Howard, Swing Shift, Stop Making Sense, Something Wild, Married to the Mob, The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Beloved, Rachel Getting Married, Neil Young: Heart of Gold, A Master Builder … Those are my favorites, but many of the others are vital, too — Swimming to Cambodia, Cousin Bobby, his Haitian documentaries, his brave and urgent remake of The Manchurian Candidate, his patchy but exuberant Ricki and the Flash … [Read More]

Retro Star Wars: The Force Awakens Posters Send Powerful, Nostalgic Message

’The Force Awakens.’ As we approach the month of Force Awakens, the Star Wars hype machine is still tirelessly gunning at full speed. But at least it’s doing so with a never-ending list of fun, cool (good job, Disney) ideas: Over the long weekend, IGN received three throwback posters, which have been made to resemble A New Hope’s 1977 one sheets — that is, made to emotionally manipulate you and pump you way the heck up.
